Larval source management for malaria control in Africa: myths and reality

Ulrike Fillinger, Steven W Lindsay Malaria Journal 2011, 10:353 (13 December 2011)

The manuscript presents a compelling argument for the potential value of larval control of malaria vectors in Africa.

Large-scale use of mosquito larval source management for malaria control in Africa: a cost analysis

Eve Worrall, Ulrike Fillinger Malaria Journal 2011, 10:338 (8 November 2011)

Despite its enormous historical successes, mosquito larval source management (LSM) remains a largely forgotten and often dismissed intervention for malaria control in Africa, in large part because of the perceived cost of such interventions. The paper shows that costs for LSM compare favourably with costs for IRS and LLINs, especially in areas with moderate and focal malaria transmission where mosquito larval habitats are accessible and well defined.

Community participation for malaria elimination in Tafea Province, Vanuatu: Part I. Maintaining motivation for prevention practices in the context of disappearing disease

Jo-An M Atkinson, Lisa Fitzgerald, Hilson Toaliu, George Taleo, Anna Tynan, Maxine Whittaker, Ian Riley, Andrew Vallely Malaria Journal 2010, 9:93 (12 April 2010)

This article is part of a collection on Towards malaria...

The study emphasizes the importance of community participation in achieving and sustaining malaria elimination. Approaches focusing exclusively on expectations of individual behaviour change are unlikely to produce substantial and long-term effects in malaria prevention and, instead, comprehensive interventions are needed that take account of the social context.

Achieving high coverage of larval-stage mosquito surveillance: challenges for a community-based mosquito control programme in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Prosper P Chaki, Nicodem J Govella, Bryson Shoo, Abdullah Hemed, Marcel Tanner, Ulrike Fillinger, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2009, 8:311 (30 December 2009)

This paper relates a pilot study on mosquito control using larvicide in the town of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Long-term anopheline control using larvicides is an amazing logistic achievement, which could be successfully emulated in other urban areas

Window screening, ceilings and closed eaves as sustainable ways to control malaria in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Sheila B Ogoma, Khadija Kannady, Maggy Sikulu, Prosper P Chaki, Nicodem J Govella, Wolfgang R Mukabana, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2009, 8:221 (29 September 2009)

The paper evaluates the reported motives behind installation of ceilings and screens in a large East African urban city endemic for malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. The reported human preferences for blocking specific mosquito entry points are compared with the known preferences of mosquitoes for various points of entry into houses.

Identifying the most productive breeding sites for malaria mosquitoes in The Gambia

Ulrike Fillinger, Heleen Sombroek, Silas Majambere, Emiel van Loon, Willem Takken, Steven W Lindsay Malaria Journal 2009, 8:62 (10 April 2009)

A paper on an important aspect of malaria vector ecology, with relevance to control. The results indicate that anti-larval interventions in this area of The Gambia cannot be targeted in space or time during the rainy season.

A tool box for operational mosquito larval control: preliminary results and early lessons from the Urban Malaria Control Programme in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Ulrike Fillinger, Khadija Kannady, George William, Michael J Vanek, Stefan Dongus, Dickson Nyika, Yvonne Geissbühler, Prosper P Chaki, Nico J Govella, Evan M Mathenge, Burton H Singer, Hassan Mshinda, Steven W Lindsay, Marcel Tanner, Deo Mtasiwa, Marcia C de Castro, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2008, 7:20 (25 January 2008)

A programme which delegates responsibility for routine mosquito control and surveillance to modestly-paid community members. This pilot study addresses some of the important issues of larviciding in an urban environment.
